FAQ
Keyboard
Try it Out and Return
We know that deciding which split keyboards is fitting you can be overwhelming. Also, it simply might not be the right thing for you (not that we would think that! We love them). Therefore, we offer a **30 day try-out period** (Generally, we oblige with German law, but extend the deadline until which you can return the Keyboard). This way you can try out the keyboard and if you do not like it, you can send it back to us.
Unfortunately, you will have to cover the shipping costs as well as provide us with images of the turned on keyboard right before packaging it to show that it still works and has no substantial damages. Of course if you tinker with the keyboard (i.e. such as soldering etc.) we will reject this.
What Are All the Features that a ZMK Keyboard Has?
If you select ZMK as you choice of firmware your keyboard will come with he below features:
- Plug & Play: The keyboard comes fully assembled, tested, and working right out of the box.
- ZMK Studio: The keyboard can be configured using ZMK Studio (see here for instructions).
- The ZMK Keyboards come with a Supermini nrf52840 as their Microcontroller unit.
- ZMK Keyboards come equipped with 51 kΩ ±1% Through Hole resistors (D1.9 x L3.4mm) for limiting the current such that the components will not get damaged in any case.
- If you want to switch to QMK, you will need the Sea-Picro RP2040, a 137 kΩ ±1% Through Hole, D2.5 x L4.7mm (or similar size as there is room) and some soldering/ de-soldering.
- ZMK keyboards come with an OLED on each side.
- Each half of a ZMK keyboard can be equipped with an encoder.
- ZMK Keyboards come with RGB and underglow LEDs electrically turned off due to firmware limitations. If the functionality comes in the future, RGB can be turned on. However, we cannot recommend it, as you are running a battery powered keyboard which will be quickly drained if you turn on the LEDs.
- 3D-Printed Case with customizability and the possibility to attach Add-Ons. Additionally to the other attachment mechanisms, there is a tripod compatible screw for every keyboard available. Each keyboard has rubber feet to prevent slipping.
- Magnetic Ring Adapter to magnetically attach accessories (such as a tripod) to the keyboard.
- ZMK Keyboards do not ship with a USB-C cable as it is not required for bluetooth connection. Note, that it is not possible to charge them via a cable that connects each half with one another. Please also note that you require a device that the keyboard can connect to via bluetooth.
What Are All the Features that a QMK Keyboard Has?
If you select QMK as you choice of firmware your keyboard will come with he below features:

What Firmware Does the Kamo Keyboards Ship with?
Kamo comes with two different Firmware choices: ZMK or QMK. When selecting ZMK you will have a Supermini nrf52840 as your microcontroller. All ZMK keyboards come with ZMK Studio.
When selecting QMK you will have a Sea-Picro RP2040 as your microcontroller. All QMK keyboards come with Vial
Can I Get a Special Firmware with My Keyboard?
No, we do not customize the firmware as this would increase the payload significantly. This is also what Vial and ZMK Studio are for. With them you can remap keys, change layers etc. It should have plenty of features to make almost everything possible. However, you can contact us and ask what you require. Maybe we can help you out.
What is the "Miryoku" layout?
We offer you the option to get your keyboard shipped with a Miryoku QWERTY layout. We highly recommend this layout. It is amazing (see https://github.com/manna-harbour/miryoku and https://github.com/manna-harbour/miryoku/tree/master/docs/reference).
Take a look and read through the documentation. It is an "ergonomic", minimal, orthogonal, and universal keyboard layout focusing on minimal finger movement and full utilisation of your thumbs. It is what we are driving day to day.
What do you mean by "Case, Adapters and Accessories"?
- The case is printed using PLA. The top case is black and the bottom case is a opaque filament color. Currently these are the only options as we are limited to a small scale production. Maybe more colors will come in the future so stay tuned.
- There is a Magnetic Ring Adapter in the keyboard. You can attach magnets to the case such as tenting solutions.
- You can mount a tripod (or other accessories) with a 1/4 inch Thread.
- You can mount tenting stilts that you can purchase from us.
- You can mount straps that you can attach to something of your choice using Velcro.
What Switches do you use? Why do you only sell RED Switches?
- Currently we only offer RED switches. We made this choice to keep the product affordable as we do not have the funds to hold a large amount of inventory of switches. Maybe there will be more choices in the future. Let us know your wishes.
- Why can I not order my keyboard without switches? Because we are testing each and every keyboard, fully assembled before shipping it out to you. We want to make sure that everything works and without switches it would be tough to test every key without increasing the assembly time significantly.
What Keycaps are on the Keyboards?
The keycaps are double shot keycaps from womierkeyboard. As we are only a small scale production, we currently cannot offer custom/ special keycaps for the thumbclusters but use something that fits the design.
The specifications:
- Color Options: Black
- Material: PBT
- Profile: Low Profile (Uniform Profile)
- Printing Method: Double-Shot
- Height: 4.5mm
How to Change Between QMK and ZMK
- To switch between ZMK and QMK there are two requirements.
- Minimal soldering and de-soldering has to be done.
- You will need a compatible Microcontroller and Through Hole Resistor.
Please note that switching between ZMK and QMK will remove your warrenty.
Please find here a detailed documentation with images and instructions how to switch. If you have questions on the process, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
- Please only work with soldering equipment if you know what you are doing and use all the safety measures and equipment that are recommended for such a task.
- You are performing the change between QMK and ZMK at you own risk. While the hardware and software allows such a change if done correctly, Kamo Keyboards GmbH/Kamo Keyboards Limited will not be held eligable in any ways if you perform the switch between QMK to ZMK or vice versa.
Where can I change my keymaps with Vial?
You can get the software at https://get.vial.today/ or you can use the web frontend at https://vial.rocks/.
Where can I change my keymaps with ZMK Studio?
You can get the software at https://zmk.studio/download or you can use the web frontend at https://zmk.studio/
Why Do You Use PLA
We run our personal keyboards for over a year now and printed them with PLA. It is easy to print, looks clean and the long running tests show that it works perfect for the keyboards without compromising the quality.
Usually, a keyboard is not laying around in the sun or sinking to the bottom of the sea or pool :)
Why Can I not Choose More Colors for the Case?
We only manufacture at a small scale. Currently, we are only offering a standard set to keep the prices reasonable.
Maybe in the future you will be spoiled for choices. In any case (ha, get it?), reach out to us and tell us your ideas and wishes.
